MEET SOW 101 AT THE GRIZZLY & WOLF DISCOVERY CENTER

MEET SOW 101

Sow 101 is a long time resident of the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center in West Yellowstone, Montana.  You can meet her at anytime of the year because the bears at the Discovery Center do not hibernate.  They are fed year around and, consequently, they do not hibernate as bears in the wild do.

Her name is derived because as a 6 month old cub she was the 101st bear to be tagged in the Yellowstone Ecosystem. She lived in Yellowstone for 20 years and raised several sets of cubs.

Unfortunately, in the summer of 2002 she and her two small cubs were allowed access to pet food, unsecured garbage and human food just 10 miles from the town of West Yellowstone.

She and her cubs were captured and transported to the Discovery Center where they lived together for the first year.  However, as the cubs grew it became apparent that the Discovery Center could not keep them due to a lack of den space for the two 400 pound yearlings.  The Center made arrangements for the cubs to be sent to another facility.

It took several years, but, according to keepers at the Center, 101 has adapted to life at the Center and does well interacting with the other residents there.
