The town of West Yellowstone, Montana had a truly unique buffalo herd. They could be seen at many locations throughout the town. They are the painted buffalo of the "Where The Painted Buffalo Roam" project.
This project began in the fall of 2006 when the West Yellowstone Economic Development Council (WYED) commissioned 25 artists from the states of Minnesota, Colorado, Wyoming and Montana to submit their drawings for designs to be painted on 26 life sized fiberglass buffalo cows.
The artists had three themes to choose from - Yellowstone Park - Historic West Yellowstone and the American Indian.
The original buffalo herd was introduced to the public in June of 2007.
The herd was enlarged in 2008 when 9 of the original artists and one new artist were commissioned to paint 10 buffalo calves.
In August of 2009 the entire herd was auctioned off. Many of them can still be seen on the streets of West Yellowstone while others are now as far away as New York.
Plans are underway for the summer of 2013 when the herd will be corralled once again on the lawn of the Yellowstone Historic Center for your viewing pleasure.
